Update: The Guild of the Silver Rondel announces that the Bal d’Argent will be held in conjunction with this event.  Dinner (Saturday night) will be a sit-down course, followed by a buffet course in conjunction with the ball.  All event attendees are welcome to stay and enjoy the music, and mayhap the dancing too.

MEETINGS AND CLASSES

Guilds are encouraged to nominate a time for an introduction session for interested people.  Guilds are welcome to have more formal meetings too.

For the Collegium part of the event, guilds are asked to offer at least one introductory-level class, and at least one more advanced class.

Tournament will be fought in two parts.
Winner of Tournament will be crowned as the King Bee and presented with a hand made helmet mantle.

Tournament Format:The Tournament will be contested over two parts.
Part the first: Entering the Hive.
For the first round each combatant will hold the field in turn, using their choice in weapon style. They will face the other combatants one at a time, who will be armed with a spear to simulate fighting your way into the hive.
For the second round the top half of the field of combatants will be selected to compete one on one in their choice of weapon style. The combatants will continue to engage in honorable combat until one is left remaining to be crowned the King Bee.
A & S: Bee related creation or an item made using honey/wax.

The A&S competition theme for July is ‘Best Disguise for a Modern Item’ eg scrip bags, bottlecovers, chaircovers, etc. We already have people busy designing, sewing and riveting to get their entry ready in time!

The class for the day will be run by the lovely Lady Helouys le Poer, who will be visiting us to teach a class on Calligraphy and Illumination.

This week will also be our Leet Court, the administrative meeting for the group, which we have about once a quarter.  It’s not too horrible a meeting, and you get to meet everyone and find out what’s happening.  Other weeks will see people working on projects or practicing their martial skills.

There’s a map at http://tiny.cc/w0xbu .  It’s a satellite map, but you can hit the ‘Map’ box in the top right hand corner to convert it to a street map. Basically park alongside the park somewhere between the cross streets of Clifford and Montague Sts.  Newcomers are always welcome to join us and ask questions about what it is that we do.

The feast will be at Cockatrice Farm (76 Barkers Lane, Yarra, near junction of Hume and Federal Highways).  The feast steward is Lady Jocelyn de Holyer, one of the finest cooks in the land.  Please join us for an enjoyable day and lovely evening.

This is our next event, and we have some fun ideas.  The food will be visually unusual (but tasty) and we’re hoping to involve the Lieder Theatre acrobats again.

There is some discussion on the menu at the Cockatrice Farm blog.

This is our annual event in experimental campfire cooking. We take recipes more than 600 years old, and we try to translate and re-create them. We get the meat from the farm, as well as the vegetables and herbs. We have to buy in nuts and spices, but we grind them up ourselves in a mortar and pestle.

Saturday had strong winds which made putting up the tents difficult. Indeed, we had to take down our ‘purple’ tent with the latin motto because the winds were too high.

Everybody who was not otherwise busy was asked to chop, grind or stir something.

The apple and parsnip fritters in beer batter were very popular. They were scattered with “poudre douce” or sweet powders, made with cinnamon and nutmeg and anise and raw sugar (maybe some others).

The dish of the night was the peacock stewed in wine and dates and pinenuts. Delicious. Allison picked up a young peacock at the last poultry auction for $15, as she figured that was cheaper than chook meat. We used a recipe for pheasant, as peacocks are just a large type of pheasant, and the result was very acceptable.

The other hit for the night was a savoury ginger custard sauce for the chickens roasted on the spit. Yum.

Basically all the 12 dishes worked, and there was plenty of contrast. I admit that we cheated a bit with the camelyne (cinnamon) sauce as we just ran out of time. There were just 30 people at the feast, but this campfire cooking is really hard work for larger numbers.

After the feast, we sat around the campfire singing songs. The wind dropped, and it really was very pleasant out there. We had Bethan and Annabel and Gui from the Sydney SCA, who did some madrigals as well as some silly songs and a few campfire favourites.

There was a heavy combat tourney on the Saturday and some training (heavy and archery) on the Sunday. On both days, but especially the Sunday, we did some horse riding.

Last year’s event was a great night.  It’s not the regular SCA crowd, so it gives a lot of others a medieval experience.

A big difference this year was that we did all the cooking over the campfire, with some fabulous new equipment.  See the Cockatrice Farm website for a detailed discussion on our dining.

Some highlights of the event:

• Tig was made a Mistress of the Laurel, the premier award for arts and sciences
• Will was granted an Award of Arms, so now Lord Will
• New fighter Kori managed to slay the king in one of the battles
• New archer Shaun shot Ulric, (“wicked”) head of the famed House Drakkar, with his first shot
• New archer Alys scored a beauty on one of the Descartes knights
• Cristoval and Alys had a fine new tent
• Merewyn proved herself adept at setting things on fire, in a good way
• Maud sang in the tavern (en francais)
• Rose (Pinkerbell) was the best-dressed waterbearer in the kingdom, under the watchful eye of Astrid
• Helen managed to get to more A&S classes than anyone else, while still being about the most helpful around the campsite
• The young lads got up to some laddish behaviour, but redeemed themselves lugging water for the fighters
• Jochen wore rabbit ears in combat, in what turned out to be wabbit season.
